Day 3 We Work!
Hello all. I apologize for the delay wih Internet reception here at Tulane. Might of had something to do with the fact that it was the hottest day of the year to date here in NOLA.
Words to describe today's experiences: teamwork, selfless dedication, and pride. As the day began we split into multiple groups, one working to finish Dwight's exterior, another Miss Lucille's yard and an additional to begin a massive painting renovation on Miss Hazel's house. As the day progressed projects changed and evolved. It was so rewarding to see twenty kids painting the many intricate details and wild New Orleans colors that Fred had given us. It didn't matter who was up on a ladder, who was gathering paint or extra brushes; each kid did their part to allow the project to emerge into a beautiful outdoor space that Miss Hazel can be proud to call her own.
Over on LaHarpe Street, Pete led the troops in a valiant, well-executed plan to finish Dwight's exterior. Though I myself did not see the final product, I can still hear the pride that resonated in Pete's voice when he talked about the finished project and how impressed he was with the kids efforts.
Cleanup is never the fun part of the job but it's something we once again come together so well to do. After returning to the dorms we recouped and headed to he dining halls to give the kids another taste of college. The highlight of the evening was taking Fred's recommendation to head to Rochebear's Sno Balls where we selected for
a large variety of flavors and were able to taste the Southern and delicious version of what we Jerseyeans refer to as Gelati.
After a trip to the Rec Center we recovened to reflect on our day and discuss the significance of coming together and why this trip truly is so special for everyone involved. It is much appreciated that all of you have taken the time to follow us and we appreciate your kind and encouraging words. Tomorrow the kids will take a break from the recovery efforts and will gain some valuable insights on New Orleans culture as we look to visit the Swamps of Louisiana and the French quarter!
Thanks for reading, stay tuned!
